Free cloud storage: what you trade for zero cost
Every major platform gives away storage, and the amounts are calibrated with some care: enough to become the place your photographs live, not enough to stay free once they do. That is not a criticism, it is the business model, and understanding it makes the difference between using a free tier deliberately and being surprised by it.
What the free tiers actually include
The headline figure is the least useful number in this comparison, for two reasons.
The first is what counts against it. On some platforms the allowance is shared across mail, documents, photographs and device backups, which means a full inbox can stop your phone backing up. On others, photographs are metered separately. Two services advertising the same capacity can behave completely differently once a real household’s files are in them.
The second is what happens at the ceiling. Providers do not treat a full account identically. Some stop accepting new uploads and leave everything readable. Some suspend device backup silently, which is the failure mode that costs people data, because backups appear to be running until the day they are needed. A minority begin a deletion countdown after a prolonged period over quota or inactive.
Before trusting any free tier with something you cannot replace, these are the questions that decide the outcome. None of them is the advertised capacity.

Answer those six and the comparison resolves itself. Compare headline capacities and you have compared the one number that will be different in a year anyway.
Scanning, limits and privacy terms
Free storage is not scanned more aggressively than paid storage in most cases, and the assumption that it is tends to distract from the real distinctions.
What actually differs between providers is the model.
Some encrypt your files at rest with keys they hold, which means the provider can technically read content. This is what allows server-side search of your documents, photograph recognition and the recovery of an account when you forget your password. It is a genuine feature set, purchased with access.
Others offer end-to-end encryption, where keys never leave your devices. Search and recognition then happen locally or not at all, and if you lose your key, the provider cannot help you. The trade is real in both directions.
Beyond that, two obligations apply almost universally and are not negotiable by tier. Providers scan for known child sexual abuse material using hash matching, which is a legal requirement in most jurisdictions. And providers respond to lawful requests for data they are able to produce, which is a function of the encryption model rather than of the price you pay.
The clause worth reading in any policy is the licence you grant. Storage services need permission to copy, transmit and re-encode your files in order to function, and a well-drafted policy limits that permission to operating the service. Language extending it to product improvement or training deserves attention, and it is the paragraph that has changed most often in recent years.
Export and lock-in
This is the part most people discover too late, and it is the strongest argument for treating a free tier as convenience rather than as a backup.
Bulk export exists everywhere, largely because data portability is now a legal requirement in the European Union and elsewhere. Its quality varies enormously. A good export preserves original files, folder structure, timestamps and metadata. A poor one delivers re-encoded copies, flattens the hierarchy, splits the result into numbered archives and loses the album organisation you spent years building.
Photographs are the sharpest case. Some services upload a compressed copy and discard the original after a period, so the export returns the compressed version. Others keep originals only on paid tiers. If the original file matters to you, verify which of these applies before it is the only copy you have.
The subtler lock-in is not the files but the structure around them: shared links that break, collaborators who lose access, albums and metadata that have no equivalent in the destination service. Migrating is rarely impossible and frequently unpleasant.
When free storage fails you
Free tiers are a poor fit for three cases in particular.
As your only copy of anything. Any single service is one account problem away from unavailable, and an account can be suspended for reasons unrelated to your files, with an appeal process rather than a support line. Storage held by one company is not a backup, whatever it costs.
For anything with a legal retention requirement, since free tiers usually exclude the versioning, audit trail and recovery guarantees that make retention defensible.
For long-term archives of irreplaceable material. The economics of free service do not oblige a provider to keep offering it, and the notice period when terms change is measured in months.
The widely used rule remains the right one: three copies, on two kinds of media, one of them elsewhere. A free cloud tier can be exactly one of those three. It is a bad choice for all three.
Choosing by use case
Match the tool to the job and the trade-offs mostly resolve themselves.
For working files you actively edit and share, whichever service integrates with the software you already use will beat a technically superior alternative, because friction determines whether you use it consistently.
For phone backups, the platform’s own service is the path of least resistance, and the practical question is only whether the allowance covers your photograph volume, which for most people it will not for long.
For an archive you intend to keep for decades, pay for storage and keep a local copy. Free storage is not designed for permanence, and pricing it as though it were is the mistake.
For anything sensitive, choose end-to-end encryption and accept losing server-side search, because that is the actual trade being offered.
The general principle is worth stating plainly. Free storage is a sample, engineered to become inconvenient to leave at roughly the point it becomes useful. Used with that in mind, it is a good deal. Mistaken for a backup, it is the reason people lose photographs.
